img_2320“Venting is a problem near me. In Bottineau County ND there is a permanent exemption on flaring. There’s no rules that require that they have to try to capture any of the gas. So there are a fair amount of wells that are flaring a lot. And they are not even considered in any state statistics. So when they say we know exactly how much is being flared off, no they don’t. I know Bottineau and maybe Renville county there are wells that have a permanent exemption but they’re not supposed to have it. And it’s hard to tell, in ND it’s hard to find their policies because they don’t put them on their website and I don’t know if you can even get into where it is. So it was like re-capturing whatever comes off the tanks. On most of the wells there’s no equipment even to do that. But on my own site, and there’s supposed to be flaring at all time.

Two years ago I had state representative and a reclamation person that witnessed that there was a high centration of methane coming off. It was almost nauseating. And so we reported that and the company actually got a $10,000 fine from the health department. I have no knowledge of them negotiating that down but they may have. That’s kind of standard procedure in ND.”
