“My name is Joletta Bird Bear, and I live on the Fort Berthold Reservation, in an area called Mandaree. It’s a very rural place. I plan to live in Mandaree for the rest of my life; I own land there, and am also am a mineral owner. But I have real concerns about the impacts of oil and gas development on my community. We’re at the epicenter of the Bakken and the Three Forks area development, so we see and observe everything.
“I don’t have any drilling on my land. But there are wells and rigs all around me– probably within a half a mile in each direction. Some evenings, when I step outside, it sounds like I’m living just over the hill from a major metropolitan airport. The sound is just tremendous out there, and it’s from the oil and gas rigs, or they’re fracking, or they’re flaring. Usually it’s the flaring, the sound of flaring.”
